Allergic Dermatitis

Our skin is very sensitive and requires proper care. However, there are various types of diseases that put a bad impact on our skin. One such disease is allergic dermatitis. In layman language you can name it like a rash, however it medical terminology, it is called allergic dermatitis. It happens when your skin reacts to certain types of substances called allergens. Allergens could be costume jewelry, cosmetics, rubber, gloves, hair color dyes, and poison ivy. So far there are no solid reasons that have been identified with which we can easily relate allergic dermatitis. It is the first form of contact dermatitis; the other form is ICD irritant contact dermatitis.
Sign and Symptoms:

Allergic dermatitis is a skin disease that does not spread, while ICD spreads to other parts of the body. This is the major and differentiating point between Allergic and irritant dermatitis. The common sign and symptoms of allergic dermatitis are:

Presence of red rash 

a. Blisters – A small fluid pocket that develops on the upper skin due to freezing, burning, rubbing, etc.
b. Draining the fluid from blister
c. Itching – Skin irritation that forces you to scratch the affected area of the skin
d. Dry, red patches look like a burn.

How to Treat Allergic Dermatitis

There are some home tips and tricks that you can follow too early get rid of allergic dermatitis. These tips are:

a. Avoid touching allergens that cause rashes,
b. Apply cold moist compresses for about 25 to30 minutes, two or three times daily,
c. Use Oral antihistamines such as Zyrtec (cetirizine), Clarinex (desloratadine), Xyzal (levocetirizine) Allegra (fexofenadine) and Clarinex (loratadine) are very helpful in treating allergic dermatitis. Use these medicines after consulting doctors.
d. Avoid using antihistamine lotion because it may make the skin more allergic and irritating.
e. Hydrocortisone cream or ointment can also be used on the affected area.

How to Diagnose Allergic Dermatitis

There are various tests available to diagnose. Diagnosis is very necessary because your doctor can not give you proper medicines without knowing the causes and disease. Common tests are:

a. Patch testing: It is a test to examine the substance which comes in contact with the skin is causing the allergic or inflammation to the skin. Substance is attached to the skin with adhesive tape and left there for 48 hours. Then, the skin is examined to see any type of skin rash or inflammation.

b. Skin biopsy: It is a method in which skin tissue is removed or taken and then examined in a laboratory to diagnose the issue. This removed part of the skin is placed in formaldehyde or any other type of solution and then results are derived.

c. Potassium hydroxide preparation test: A test to identify any fungal infection of the skin. Under this method, the doctor usually uses a sharp blade to get a sample skin and then examine it in a microscope.

d. ROAT: It is also called the Repeat open application test. It is done to check the significance of the reaction on the skin.

e. Dimethylgloxime test: This test is done to check the existence of nickel in any metallic item or object.
